My SQL Saturday #112 (Birmingham 2012) Sessions

I am excited to have three sessions accepted for SQL Saturday #112, Birmingham 2012. This will be my third year attending the Birmingham edition of SQL Saturday and I am very much looking forward to it. The Steel City SQL Users Group is sponsoring the event, and they have the same great location as previous years. I look forward to seeing some old contacts and hopefully making new ones.

I’ve included my schedule and some comments about each session below.

2:00 PM: What’s New for Developers in SQL Server 2012

SQL Server 2012 offers something new for any role: DBA, developer, DW architect, etc. This session will focus in on the features that are new for developers. We’ll cover sequences, FileTable, SSIS, SQL Server Data Tools (formerly codename “Juneau”) and a few minor things that fit in 60 minutes. If you were there for Birmingham 2011, yes, this will pretty much be the same session but showing the release bits instead of CTP.

3:15 PM: Introduction to FileTables

FileTables are an extension of FILESTREAM, a feature I’ve presented on frequently and co-authored a book on (The Art of SQL Server FILESTREAM to be published by Simple Talk Publishing soon). FileTables offer many new possibilities and those will be introduced in this session. Complete with demos and code samples, you’ll learn about setting up your server and database for FileTables, the 4 “root” folders in a FileTable path, and how to programmatically access them with or without transactional context.

4:30 PM: Upgrading SSIS Packages to SQL Server 2012

I am very impressed with the changes that came to SQL Server 2012 SSIS. SQL Server Integration Services has many new features and much improved ones. Of course, many of us are not starting with a blank slate: we already have lots of projects and packages in 2008/2008 R2. So the driver behind this session is how you can upgrade your packages to take advantage of the new features in 2012. (This is a preview of the session I will deliver at TechEd 2012 in Orlando in a few weeks.)

So, that’s it. Oh, and attendees who bring caffeine (in the form of Diet Coke) and/or sugar (in the form of dark chocolate) to the last session will receive special consideration for giveaways!
